Your Very Own Veggie Garden

Growing your own vegetables not only gives your household convenient access to fresh, nutrient dense, organic produce, it can also play a part in combating climate change and waste by reducing plastic packaging and food miles.

Here are a few tips from Eat Grow Garden to get you started on your journey.

Location

  • Too little sunlight can be damaging to your garden’s progress
  • Look for a north facing, sunny spot in the yard for your veggie patch and observe how the sun travels over your veggie patch during the day
  • Most veggies need 6-8 hours of sun per day
  • Large leafed plants will cope with a shadier spot in your veggie patch
  • Positioning your plants properly will aid in accelerating growth

Soil

  • Keep your soil nutrient-packed to ensure vegetables grow healthily and in abundance
  • Achieve this by adding a thick layer of compost on all your vegetable growing beds at least once per year
  • If you don’t have access to compost, purchase an organic fertilizer

Watering

As much as plants require sunlight, keeping them hydrated with an adequate amount of water in both summer and winter is absolutely essential. Follow the below as a guide:

  • 1L of water per square metre of garden space equals to 1mm of rain
  • Use a little less if you have a clay soil that holds onto moisture and use more for a free-draining sandy soil
  • Ensure your veggie patch gets an early drink as it will require water whilst the sun is shining
  • Consider installing an irrigation system for a consistent watering system
