The Data Behind a Connected Community

A Benchmark for Community in Melbourne’s West

As Melbourne’s west continues to grow, new data from the Good Neighbours Western Suburbs Survey positions Woodlea as a leading example of how early delivery, strong amenity and ongoing engagement drive pride, connection and liveability.

Led by the Good Neighbours Movement – an independent organisation focused on strengthening communities through data and strategic insight, with support from Woodlea – the research draws on responses from 823 residents across 17 suburbs to highlight what’s working, and where improvement is needed.

Building More Than Homes

Over the past decade, Woodlea has grown into a thriving community. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on bringing forward key infrastructure – schools, parks, retail and community facilities – so residents can experience the benefits of a fully functioning neighbourhood from the outset. This approach is reflected in the survey results, where nearly 70% of residents in Aintree say they feel proud of where they live, the highest level recorded across the study area.

That sense of pride reflects a growing connection between people and place. When residents can see their community taking shape around them, it builds confidence, belonging and a shared identity that strengthens over time.

Designing for Everyday Life

Additionally, the survey shows that almost four in five Woodlea residents believe parks and green spaces are well delivered, significantly higher than the broader western corridor.

The importance of well-designed open space is clear, as good parks are strongly linked to wellbeing, social connection and perceptions of safety.

Spaces like Frontier Adventure Park and Hazelwood Adventure Park have become widely recognised destinations across the region. These spaces are the backdrop for community life, where families gather, neighbours connect and a sense of belonging is built.

Connection at the Heart of Community

The survey also highlights the importance of social connection and trust in building strong communities.

At Woodlea, this is reflected in the way residents engage with each other and with the broader community. The research shows that more than 40% of residents regularly connect through local digital platforms, while close to one in three participate in community events.

Together, these behaviours point to a highly connected community, where both online and in-person interactions play a key role in fostering a sense of belonging and shared identity.

Building Trust Over Time

The Good Neighbours Movement notes that, “when early delivery, quality design and genuine commitment to residents come together, it’s possible to build strong levels of pride and connection.”

At Woodlea, this is reflected in the level of trust residents place in the community. 44% of Aintree respondents say they trust their developer to act in their best interests – the highest result across the study area.

The survey reinforced both the positive impact already being made and our responsibility to continue strengthening community connection into the future.
