A Day of Community and History at the Rockbank Inn

The Rockbank Inn Open Day welcomed the Aintree community to explore a key local heritage site, combining history, guided tours, and a relaxed atmosphere as part of the Melton City Libraries Heritage Festival.

A Day of Discovery

The Rockbank Inn Open Day on Saturday, May 2 brought the community together for a day that was as engaging as it was meaningful. It was an opportunity to step into the past, share stories, and experience a significant piece of local history firsthand. Held in partnership with Melton City Libraries as part of their Heritage Festival, the event welcomed a strong turnout of visitors, all eager to explore the 170+ year-old site and learn more about its place in Victoria’s history.

From the outset, there was a sense of curiosity and connection. The relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere encouraged people to linger, while enjoying complimentary coffee and Greek donuts, and sharing conversations about the area’s past and future.

Stories Beneath the Surface

A highlight of the day were the guided tours from Extent Heritage and Abode Restoration, which featured engaging walkthroughs of the Inn and expert insights about the archaeology and restoration of the site.

Their firsthand knowledge underscored how rare this project was – unlike many heritage sites that are lost to development, the Rockbank Inn had been carefully preserved through physical efforts and detailed documentation.

The restoration focused on stabilising the structure and ensuring the building remains both authentic and accessible. Maintaining the original character of the Inn was central to every stage, allowing its history to be experienced in a meaningful way.

A Shared Moment to Remember

Throughout the day, the walking tours connected people to the centuries of travel, trade, and early community life in Victoria. The event created a steady rhythm of exploration and discovery, and brought people together through a shared experience.

The success of the Open Day reinforced the significance of Rockbank Inn as more than a restored structure. It stands as a lasting community asset, where learning, gathering, and ongoing connection take place, reflecting Woodlea’s broader commitment to heritage and community-building.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the day’s success, including Melton City Libraries and the heritage and restoration experts who generously shared their knowledge.
