150,000 sunflowers sprouting across Melbourne’s west

A sea of sunflowers have sprouted as part of a large-scale installation that aims to bring neighbours together

Led by Woodlea, in collaboration with Djerriwarrh Health Services, Edmund Rice Services Mt. Atkinson and We Love Aintree, the initiative – known as Blooming West – aims to encourage local children and the broader community to design, plant, grow and harvest sunflower plots at home and within key local settings.

Perhaps the most impressive of the several sites is Woodlea’s community site, located within the brand new Woodlea Town shopping precinct.

Set within a grand 2800sqm site, the impressive sunflower installation is a destination for Woodlea residents and the broader community to visit and enjoy Blooming West on a massive scale.

Fun facts

  • 16 kilograms of seed was planted on the Woodlea site in December 2020
  • The plated species, known as Helianthus Annuus, has grown to impressive heights (between one to two metres)
  • From above, the sunflowers surround the word WOODLEA
