Woodlea wraps up 2019

As we near the end of 2019, we can’t help but feel nostalgic as we look back at what a wonderful year we’ve had at Woodlea. Here are some of the many highlights which have defined this year as such a huge success!

 

Back in February, Woodlea became home to the largest grammar school in Melbourne’s west, when Bacchus Marsh Grammar Primary Campus opened with 625 students attending on the very first day.

 

Soon after, we celebrated the announcement of Coles Supermarket as the major tenant in our upcoming Woodlea Town Centre — said to be one of the largest Coles in Melbourne’s west, at nearly 3,500 sqm. Currently, under construction & on track to open its doors next year!

In another first for Woodlea, we became the first-ever short course sponsor at The Herald Sun/Transurban Run for the Kids event. Taking place in April, over 22,000 people — including many from the Woodlea community — crowded Melbourne Docklands to help raise $1.5 Million for the Good Friday Appeal.

 

July was a big month for Woodlea — not only did we officially hit 4,000 residents, we planted a whopping 3,000 trees at our annual community tree planting day in line with National Tree Day.

 

Woodlea also played host to a series of culinary masterclasses in July, in collaboration with a social enterprise organisation, Free to Feed, which seeks to showcase the talents of people seeking asylum, refugees and new migrants.

 

Cultivating a stronger sense of community, not-for-profit social enterprise Aintree Cafe and Garden opened their doors in August. More than just a coffee stop, all profits from the cafe are filtered back into the local community through their parent organisation, We Love Aintree.

To further showcase Woodlea’s diversity, our first ‘Humans of Woodlea’ candidates were announced, in order to share a collection of interesting stories from current residents of Woodlea, nominated by the community.

 

In our biggest display of community spirit, in October, Woodlea broke a world record! With a total of 835 participants, we are still pinching ourselves after achieving the official title for the largest soccer lesson of all time. Smashing the previous record by 130 people, the announcement went off with a bang, literally, as smoke jets and confetti cannons showered the stage.

 

What a year! A big thank you to our incredible community for making 2019 such a successful year — we can’t wait to make 2020 the best yet.

We’ll be taking a short break over the Christmas period to enjoy time with our families and friends (with Sunday being our last day), returning to the office on Thursday 2nd January, so be sure to pop in for a chat before we close the doors on 2019.
